Fields of Play is a valuable, pioneering work tracing the origins of both the formal and informal leisure environments developed and utilised by the people of Wales from the nineteenth century to modern times.
Superb photos from the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Wales’ collection illustrate the work throughout.
Information for the pure boxing fan is rather limited, however, and there is little mention of the early mountain fighting years.
But welcome fistic nuggets include delightful images of the American Roller Rink being prepared for Freddie Welsh v Jim Driscoll, and of Ninian Park as it was got ready for Jack Petersen v Heine Muller.
There are also some intriguing insights into lesser-known boxing venues, such as Pontypridd’s Taff Vale Park and Llanelli’s County Athletics Ground.
