- Christian Giudice, Hands of Stone: The Life and Legend of Roberto Duran(Reading, 2006)
A superbly detailed account of arguably the greatest lightweight of all time. A fantasy match-up between Duran and a prime Freddie Welsh would have been some fight.
Anyone who has ever quoted the ‘no mas’ line Duran supposedly uttered after his defeat against Sugar Ray Leonard needs to read the chapter outlining why the actual quote was ‘no quiero peleo con el payaso / I do not want to fight with this clown.’
Random Welsh-interest angle: Experienced Welsh official James Brimmel was one of the judges for the ‘no mas’ fight against Leonard.
Duran quit in the eighth round, but at the end of the seventh Brimmel – a steelworker from Cardiff – had the Panamanian just one point behind. The other two judges had Leonard ahead by two.
